I was sceptical about this book when it was first announced, my first thoughts being ‘don’t we already have enough from this series’? But I gave it a chance as nostalgia took hold of me and reminded me of my early teen years reading this series and being obsessed with waiting for the next book. I thought this would maybe be a tad boring as we’re really just seeing the same story told from Edward, brooding and controlling, right? Well yes, but also one vital thing we glean from this narrative is that Edward can see into other character’s minds. So not only do we get Edward’s story, but we also get Alice’s and Emmet’s and Rosalie’s. We see this story from so many perspectives and I really enjoyed it.
One of my favourite features of this book was the relationship between Alice and Edward. As Edward can see into Alice’s mind, we also see her predictions for the future and how her and Edward really work together on this front. I love them as a duo and how they work off of each other and both benefit each other’s gifts. We also got a little more of an Alice backstory and honestly if Stephanie Meyer wants to write Alice her own book, I am here for it, she is by far the best character. Team Edward vs Team Jacob? I’m Team Alice!
The atmosphere of this book certainly made me long for autumn, with the rainy days of Forks and the colder weather. This is such a small and isolated location that it really does bounce of the page and into your head. I have a little road map in my head of the town, although I feel this can’t help but be somewhat dictated by the films too.
I’m intrigued to know if we will see the other books transformed into Edward’s perspective or if it will be left at Midnight Sun. I think I’m kind of done with different versions of just Twilight now and would like to see this extend to other books in the series. Overall, I had fun reading this book and I think you can see Meyers as a writer has certainly improved. By no means was this literary greatness, but it was enjoyable and entertaining.
