After reading Carry On earlier this year, I was excited to pick up with Baz and Simon again in Rainbow Rowell’s latest book, Wayward Son, and it didn’t disappoint!

Carry On was written off the back of Cath from Fangirl’s fan fiction about her favourite wizard, Simon Snow. Snow’s story takes place in a Harry Potter like world and in Carry On we get to read all of Cath’s fan fiction. Wayward Son is the continuation of this story after Simon, Baz and Penny have left Watford (their magic school) and decide to go on a trip to America.
This series is good fun, easy reading and an all-round enjoyable experience. I listened to the audiobook for this one because I enjoyed it so much when listening to Carry On and I would personally really recommend it. The pacing was perfect for an audio narrative although each chapter switched which character the story was being told from, so it did get a tad confusing.

I really loved the relationship between Baz and Simon, they weren’t on a stable path but that actually shed some realistic light on relationships. I really like these two together and I felt nervous throughout the book that Simon would decide to break up with Baz. It was interesting seeing their two different perspectives from their internal monologues.
I think Baz makes my favourite characters list, he dresses like a damn stylish Vampire and is just all round smarmy and cool. He is certainly the Draco of this story, so I’m definitely getting Drarry vibes when reading the romance in Wayward Son. This is very clearly meant to be similar to Harry Potter and I like it, for this reason, it’s like a little HP fanfic all on its own.
Generally, this was a fun and easy read that was such good fun!
