Five reasons you need to be watching The Bold Type

If you’ve managed to miss it, The Bold Type is the feminist show taking the internet by storm, one episode at a time… I say taking it by storm because this is what I really hope it’s doing. If you’ve not watched this show yet and have zero clue what I’m talking about, here’s five reasons to watch it on Netflix!

This is a show following three millennial women during their time at Scarlet, an empowering magazine all about sex, beauty and bodies. Each episode has a different theme that will make you feel strong, empowered and BOLD!

This show avoids the typical stereotypes of plot lines and characters

By now we’ve seen every plot done a hundred times over, nothing seems new which also means everything is predictable. But not with this show, the plot lines are refreshing and don’t fall into typical discourse and issues. This also makes the show feel so much more real, the problems are relatable most of the time, but so are the relationships and characters.

The female boss is actually supportive and a role model, rather than terrifying and power hungry.

After films showing us characters like Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, I feel we’re well on the way to expecting all big, important bosses to also be terrifying and mean. But Jacqueline Carlyle is a powerhouse, she’s strong and fierce and bold, but she isn’t cold or harsh. She uplifts her staff and represents everything this show stands for. It’s so refreshing because when we first met her I default thought she’d be mean and cruel, but she’s the exact opposite and is probably my favourite character.

Strong and uplifting female friendships

Jane, Kat and Sutton are a trio of best friends who support each other, lift each other up and always put each other ahead of any romances. I love the bond these three have and how much it helps and supports them with whatever they go through each series. I also really enjoy that no romantic partners ever come between them and each partner knows how important these three are to each other.

Shows progressive work growth in a realistic way

The Bold Type is set mainly in the offices of Scarlet, so we are able to see many different job roles within the magazine. As we enter into season one we see Jane starting a new role as a writer, Kat is the social media director and Sutton is trying to break free from her current assistant position. I like that we have range here, varied roles and realistic growth. It doesn’t sell anything false or give unrealistic expectations about how long it takes to get into certain roles. It also shows Kat being in a really successful position at a young age and I love that, because really age doesn’t have to define your skill.

Talks openly and honestly about important topics

Every episode raises important topics from equality to our bodies and talks openly and honestly. The amount of important conversations this show has is amazing, and I really think it can help the viewers in one way or another. An example being an episode I recently enjoyed about vaginas and their smells and how it’s okay for your vagina to have a natural smell. This episode also talked about being able to name our genitals and not use shy cover up phrases for them and I LOVED that!

Overall this show is empowering, bold and so, so important. It not only demonstrates fierce female friendships and strong female leads, but it also raises vital discussions that need to be had. And it does all this without having a misandrist, man hating tone, this isn’t about taking anyone down, it’s about lifting people up. You can currently find this on Netflix in the UK, now excuse me whilst I wait for the final season to arrive.
