How to come up with new ideas for blog posts

You have the blog. You have the device to write on. You have the will power. But do you have the ideas? This is always the thing that stumps me, I set aside time to write a blog post, but I have no ideas to write about!

So where do I go for ideas?

Pinterest

Pinterest is your very own aesthetic search engine that is perfect for finding content like blog posts. You can just search the topic you’re interested in talking about and take a look at some of the posts that have been shared. Try a few different combinations of searches so you can hit all of the keywords. The trick is not to get lulled into a Pinterest addiction and sit scrolling through the site for hours.

It’s always a good idea to follow other book bloggers and join book blogging group boards so you can find even more bookish content.

Other Blogs

Similar to Pinterest, seek inspiration from others. Go on the WordPress Reader function and scroll through the blogs you follow. Or have a list of your favourite blogs saved on your browser to go to for ideas. Think about the content you most like to read and try and create your own version of it. Of course, if you’re rather obviously duplicating another blog’s post, it’s best practice to link back to their blog and say they inspired you.

Tweets

If you’re active on Twitter and see good engagement on your Tweets, you can use these as a basis for blog posts. Just take a look at your Twitter Analytics and see which posts are performing best for engagement. From here, see if you can create a blog post from some of your best content. There’s no harm in just aimlessly typing and seeing what becomes of it, it could lead to a really fun or insightful post.

Topics of Interest

Turn on the news, take a look at the trending topics on Twitter or have a chat with people around you. Take what is topical and create a blog post about it. Whether it’s a political movement that has stirred a debate or a film you want to rave about. Your blog is the perfect place to start a discussion with people who are as passionate as you!

I’d love to know where you get your blog ideas from, drop your suggestions down in the comments!

  1. I’m in a really blog inspired mood right now but have gone completely blank on ideas, so finally catching up on some posts that I hadn’t had the chance to read and here this was – fate or what? I loved this, it was just what I needed. Definitely going to be spending some time on Pinterest once I’ve finished having a reading session – thank you!

  2. Lovely post, Beth! Blog hopping and Pinterest popping (I don’t know if this is an actual term, or if I just made it up, but I think it works, yes? Haha!) are my largest sources for blog post inspiration! Whenever I draw a blank on ideas to write about, I scroll through these sites until I feel motivated to write something myself! <3

  3. I have found Pinterest to be super helpful in giving me blog post ideas, and I didn’t even start using it for that until a few months ago! Sometimes I just go to google for help as well :’) These are all fab suggestions!

  4. I love writing discussions, and I usually get inspired in one of two ways. Either I’ll be reading a blog post about a topic and have something I want to add, or it strikes up a related thought in my head. I make sure to link back to the original post in that case, of course. But sometimes I’ll just be doing something and wonder why I do that thing, or if anyone else does it. This can happen as I read or as I talk with a friend, but whatever the case, I make sure to write down the basic idea that way I can write a full post when I have the time!
