I’ve been getting back into watching more films at the moment and with that comes with more of a passion for the arts. Some films I watch give me such a need to read beautifully written literature, here are those films!
Midnight in Paris
This film is all about love and passion for the arts, be it writing, painting, music. Gill is in need of inspiration for his book and when he travels to Paris he falls in love, whilst his wife does not. But Paris in the 21st Century is nothing compared to Paris in the 1920s, where Gill is somehow transported back to each night at midnight. Upon his journey, he meets some of the greats, the Fitzgerald’s, Ernest Hemingway, Picasso. If this film doesn’t make you want to pick up a classic, I will be shocked. I’m not big on classic literature, but this made me want to try more of it.
Tolkien
If you’re at all a fan of Lord of the Rings, this film will give you the background story you’ll be dying for. Following Tolkien from a young age up until his writing The Hobbit, this film is a biopic that takes a look at one of the best fantasy authors there ever was and will be. I find Tolkien’s story fascinating and I loved how this filmed looked at his life, especially the creation of new languages.
Ever since watching this film, I have had a burning need to continue on with reading the Lord of the Rings books.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
This film is adapted from the book written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows following the lives of a group of literary loves on the island of Guernsey and Juliet, a writer in need of a boost. Juliet communicates with the society through letters and eventually goes to meet them and discovers more about how they were founded during the German occupation in World War Two.
The characters in this book each have their own literary passions and this comes through so well in the film, along with what the books they’re reading mean to them.
Eat, Pray, Love
Another book to film adaptation following one woman on her journey to self-discovery and loving herself. This one doesn’t directly relate to literature, but it has a real theme of mindfulness running throughout and appreciating the little moments in life. I personally always associate these kinds of feeling with enjoying the words on a page and the story someone has magically woven. I think we can zoom through books sometimes and forget to really read them, so this film always reminds me to take my time and enjoy what I’m reading.
Finding Neverland
Another biopic of sorts following J. M. Barry as he befriends the family who inspired him to write the fantastical world of Neverland and Peter Pan. This film was actually based off of a play, The Man Who Was Peter Pan, and tells this enchanting story that will make you desperate to read the pages of Peter Pan. This is a wonderful story about the imagination of children and the bond between this family.

Omg I loved Midnight in Paris so much! I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but I was pleasantly surprised as the story unfolded. I’ve been meaning to watch Tolkien since I knew it was going to come out, but I still haven’t!! I’m very excited to do so at some point because I have been an avid reader/viewer of all things Tolkien since I fell in love with the stories at the age of 13. And I LOVED “Guernsey”!! I watched it before I knew that it was a book and totally fell in love with the story. I picked up the book as soon as I could get my hands on it :’) Love these recommendations!! xx

If you like Midnight in Paris you should really watch the classic Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. As Sabrina says ‘Paris is always a good idea’.

The play Finding Neverland makes me feel inspired to write. I can’t think off the top of my head a film that makes me want to read. However, watching the show Hannibal prompted me to reread the Hannibal Lecter books. mostly because I kept going ‘that didn’t happen now’ or ‘that didn’t happen at all’. Turns out I wasn’t mistaken. apparently it had something to do with not being allowed to use the character of Clarisse.
Ohhh interesting to be able to draw the comparisons between the two!
So glad to see The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on the list. One of my favourite books I’ve read in 2020 and one of my favourite books about writing and books. My mum and I are planning a movie night to watch the film
