So you’ve read the Throne of Glass series, the epic books by Sarah J Maas and now you’re stuck thinking hmm, what should I read next? Well, I’m going to recommend you five books to hook you in, take you along a fantasy path and get you over your maas-ive slump!
Falling Kingdoms, Morgan Rhodes
This fantasy series is like a low key version of Game of `Thrones, filled with epic battles, magic and struggles for power. But without so much changing of setting and extra details. So for me, it is perfect. It has fierce lead characters, an author who isn’t afraid to kill anyone off and the first series ends on quite the cliff hanger. If you need to fill a fantasy shaped hole in your reading life, I’d definitely suggest giving this series a go!
The City of Brass, S. A. Chakraborty
This trilogy follows a Nahri, who is just living her life, she doesn’t have much and then suddenly she is thrown into a situation way beyond her control. Like Falling Kingdoms this is also a story of power and alliances, I suppose why I’ve added it to this list as this is exactly what the Throne of Glass series is about. Nahri certainly shares characteristics with Celaena, they are both fierce and strong, with gigantic responsibilities placed upon their shoulders.
The Priory of the Orange Tree, Samantha Shannon
Where to start with this chunky tome? The Priory of the Orange Tree follows lots of different characters, including dragons, a Queen and a dragon rider to name a few. I love the many different sides to this story, but at the heart of it is a Queendom without an heir and the struggle to protect the Queen as she tries to continue her royal line. There are so many characters within this story to fall in love with and so many settings to run away to. I adore this book and I think I’m due a reread.
Kingdom of Souls, Rena Barron
I’m actually in the middle of reading this book at the moment, but I’m recommending it for this list because of the nature of the protagonist, Arrah. She is desperately trying to discover her magic and thinks she may not have any at all. But in a world where you can trade years of your life for magic, she could make some dangerous decisions. I like how daring she is and non-conforming. She does what she likes and has her own thoughts and options and is a really interesting character to read about.
Serpent and Dove, Shelby Mahurin
And finally, because Lou is a pure badass and would get on very well with Aelin, it has to be added to this list. Lou ends up being caught doing something she shouldn’t and is thrown into a marriage with a man she hates… a witch hunter. Which isn’t great news as Lou is a witch without a coven. I love the adventure, the humour and the mischief in this story so will always recommend it on that basis.

Great list! I would add Children of Blood and Bone, which had similar plot elements, but is a completely unique look at YA Fantasy.
Vega Jane series by David Baldacci is a close match to Throne of Glass. Strong woman protagonist and some wonderful characters.
