Falling Kingdoms is a young adult fantasy book series by talented author Morgan Rhodes. I went in knowing very little and came out feeling addicted and like I needed to continue on with this epic story!

This book was recommended to me by my friend Lauren at FictionTea, she said it was an epic fantasy comparable to Game of Thrones that she was sure I would love. And guys… I did! This book was like a less heavy version of Game of Thrones and I mean that in a good way. It didn’t feel like an information dump, everything felt vital to the plot and I really enjoyed following each of the main characters – it helped there was a character glossary at the front too.

We follow two Kingdoms on the edge of war, each with a Princess who is at the centre of the plot’s narrative. The reason I say this reminded me of Game of Thrones is that one small event kickstarts a huge conflict that I think will fuel the plot in the further books in this series. The first book is very much like a prequel to the series, setting up the characters and story for the reader.

There is a constant power struggle in this book, fathers over their daughters, Kings over their Kingdoms, sorceress over their magic. Also, Morgan Rhodes is not afraid to kill her characters off without any warning. Like seriously, this woman is cruel! I felt like it was risking to get too involved/invested in any of the characters because when I did, it didn’t seem to end well. However, despite trying to avoid it, I couldn’t help but love the characters that Rhodes writes so well!

At the heart of this story is long-gone magic that could be on the brink of returning following a baby being discovered in the prologue who is destined to be special. The magic is elemental which I love, I can’t wait to read more about that as I get further into the series. I enjoyed finding out about the magic at the same pace as the main characters and seeing the way it is now regarded in this world. This also contributes to one of the other narratives we followed, a group of people who do still seem to have some form of magic, however, we never really found out too much about them, so once more, I’m intrigued to read on.

Falling Kingdoms captivated me in a way I didn’t expect. Every chapter ends on a cliffhanger and every character has such a depth that you can’t not read on. I am very excited to continue on with this series!
