Sometimes it’s really hard to stay happy and sometimes it’s hard to admit that you’re not okay. We can fall into ourselves when we feel sad, we can cut people off and ignore the help we may have around us. Sometimes we need to focus on the little things to bring tiny bits of joy into our days.

Here’s a list of the little things that make me happy when I need it most.

• The colour yellow

I think this is such a positive and happy colour. It reminds me of warmer months, but also of the cosiness of Autumn. It’s a colour that I try to surround myself with because it makes me smile.

• Dancing around and listening to music very loudly

Empowering songs are the best way to start a day I think. If you get a good beat stuck in your head in the morning and it makes you smile and dancing a bit, you’re setting yourself up for a better start to your day.

• Talking to and spending time with friends/family

It’s really easy to forget to use the people around you to add to your happiness. I have a variety of friends, and having a chat with the bookish friends about a new release, or a friend who loves the same band as me etc, these conversations really fuel me and my passions.

• Attending book events

I can’t think of anything that puts a bigger smile on my face to be honest. Whenever I go to these kinds of events I always feel 100% more motivated and I feel so proud to be in such a brilliant community and to have put so much hard work into being where I am.

• Watching fan made videos on YouTube

This is a simple guilty pleasure of mine that I have been doing for yeeeaaars. I really love remixes of my favourite films, where videos have pulled out the best parts and put them to some epic music. It makes me love the film even more and remember all the best parts.

• Eating my favourite food

For me this may well be Guylian chocolates. But generally eating something I love and can look forward to eating makes me feel excited to sit down and enjoy it.

• Reading a book with an amazing lead character

It’s usually a lot easier to escape your day to day when you’re reading about a character that makes you feel inspired. I love loosing myself in a really cool and exciting character that replaces me in my own life for just a little bit.

• Planning a trip somewhere

Whether it’s just a day out or a whole week away. I love discovering new places and going on new adventures and to plan them out gives me a lot of joy. I like working out where my next holiday will be, or what area around me I want to discover next.

• Tidying my bedroom

Possibly a bit of a weird one that is more personal to me. But I find if I enjoy being in the environment around me, then I’m a lot more likely to wake up feeling happy and enjoy being in my room. I’ve created a space I really love and it does bring me some joy to keep that space clean and tidy.

• Being in the sun

Granted, a hard one to guarantee, but on a warm, sunny day, when I can have the windows of my car down and sing along to my music, that is happiness. It’s proven that the sun does aid in our moods, and as much as I love the cosiness of the Winter, the Summer months do offer a lot more for my smile.
