At its heart, this is a book about making a difference, no matter how small you think you are. Maya and Jamie are two teens who haven’t seen each other for years when they are thrown together to help canvass for their local state candidate in the upcoming election. Slowly they both learn the power they have to make a difference by using their influence. The politics in this book is used as a plot device to allow us to get to know the characters and their motives better.

Whilst I felt it was quite obvious what direction this book was heading in, I still enjoyed the journey and getting to know Maya and Jamie. It was interesting to see them from each other’s perspectives and then their own narratives and how these contrasted with each other. I don’t usually like split narratives, but this changed every other chapter between Maya and Jamie and I felt it worked well for the story and added to it in an enjoyable way.

The topics discussed in this book were so important, it’s all about making a change and this is mentioned throughout. The characters are battling racism, ageism and sexism as they try to campaign for what is right. They talk about things that need to be talked about, and things that whilst are fictional, could become reality. Being so young and this book being aimed at younger readers gives me hope that this will really hit the target audience and encourage them to try and stand up for what they believe in.

Overall, a really enjoyable and cute read with many important messages!
