There’s something about Greek Mythology that really pulls me in, the magical elements, the epicness of it and how ingrained into different parts of film and literature. I’ve been fascinated since I was a child, so I’m excited to be talking about a new young adult fantasy series that revolves around Greek Mythology.

A. P. Mobley’s War on the Gods series is perhaps a slightly more YA version of the Percy Jackson series, also including demigod characters and teens thrown into a whole new world. This book series starts with The Helm of Darkness, where we’re introduced to Andy and Zoey right before a freak storm seems to toss them into a world of ruins, strange creatures and demigods. For a Greek Mythology lover like myself, this series honestly sounds so cool!
I’ve asked A. P. Mobley a few questions about what it was like writing about Greek Mythology.
I know it’s probably a tricky question, but do you have a favourite Greek myth?
Oh gosh, that is a bit of a tricky question! Honestly, I have a lot of Greek myths that I love, but the one that sticks in my mind as my favourite would have to be that of Eros and Psyche. In a lot of ways, I feel as though that story is the ancient Greek’s version of “love conquers all.” It just really warms my heart–at least, the variations I’ve studied do. I haven’t found a completely tragic version of that one just yet.
If you could be a Greek God or Goddess for a day, which would you pick?
Without a doubt, I would want to be Poseidon for a day. I imagine he doesn’t have to worry about holding his breath underwater, and since he’s a god of the sea, all those gorgeous but deadly creatures that inhabit it wouldn’t ever try to hurt him. If I had those abilities, even for just one day, I would take it to swim with some beautiful sharks and explore as much of the ocean as I could.
What did you find the most challenging about writing this series?
Honestly, the most challenging thing for me hasn’t been the story or characters or anything like that. I know my characters so well that they come easily, and I’ve been dreaming about this story since I was a child, so it’s hard to not be excited about telling it. Instead, the most challenging thing about writing this series is making the time to actually sit down and to be able to focus on just writing. This is because I’ve been a substitute teacher and a college student since before my debut novel was released, and in 2019 I also started selling my handmade jewellery, which has become much more prevalent to my life than I initially thought it would be. With all of these tasks to complete on top of maintaining relationships with family and friends to the best of my ability, it can be really difficult to write even 500 words at the end of each day, even if I thought about writing all day and wanted nothing more than to do so. This has been the case most days as I write the final book in my series, The Master Lightning Bolt. Hopefully, once I earn my degree I can pour more of myself into my stories, and by that time I think I will have probably cut some other things from my plate as well.
