American Royals

American Royals is a fun rom-com in a made-up world where instead of getting a President in the 1700s, America got a King.

Thank you to Penguin Platform for sending me a copy of this book to review.

This book follows various female characters in each chapter from their perspective as they see what a monarchy in America looks like in the 21st Century. I enjoyed seeing this new version of history play out and getting an insight into the feelings and responsibilities of the American Royals. I expected this to be an easy and fun read and it certainly was.

American royals by Katharine McGee Book Review

I’m getting more into dual narratives, I liked seeing the different perspectives of various characters. We have Beatrice, the future Queen of America, Samantha her sister, Nina who is Samantha’s best friend and Daphne, the Princess’ ex girlfriend. We see the royals from many different angles which makes for an interesting take on the family. At the centre of this book is the choices these characters have taken away from them about who they can love. Each of the three royal children fall in love with people they shouldn’t really or can’t be with and this book is about how they manage it.

I felt really engaged in the main issue at hand in this book and I felt angry with the characters. This book does a good job of demonstrating feminism, outdated partiachal views and the commitment to country that royal families have. There are no great messages in this book or deep meanings, but it’s fun and it’s a quick read. It indulges the tiny part of me that enjoys a romantic YA. I have to say though, I felt the ending was very disapointing and just suddenly ended with no real conclusion, but that didn’t stop me enjoying the story.
