We readers love nothing more than to throw the books we have loved at our friends. We want them to experience everything we experienced, to spread the word of the amazing books in this world and to know why were cried over fiction. Here are some books to recommend to your non-reader friends to encourage them to love reading as much as you do!
It’s important to recommend books that are easy reads, fun and captivating from the first few pages.
Vicious, Victoria Schwab
This book is perfect to recommend to a non-reader friend because it’s fast-paced, full of action and there is a wide range of characters to identify with and get to know. If your friend loves films with superheroes, especially X-Men, then this book will be right up their street. It deals with the concept of heroes and villains and people who have mutant abilities, what’s not to love?!
Caraval, Stephanie Garber
This is a book where anything can happen, it’s like stepping into a dream where the realms of possibility have no restrictions. I’d definitely recommend this to non-readers because it is a totally fun book, it has romance, magic and new worlds. It would definitely be perfect for fans of Alice in Wonderland, someone who loves a nonsense world.
The Sun is also a Star, Nicola Yoon
This YA contemporary is a fast read, filled with heartbreak, happiness, laughs, tears and will keep any reader hooked. This story is very simple but very real and emotional, it’s about two teens who have 24 hours together before she is deported. It deals with real issues but also balances humour and romance. This is a contemporary book and if your friend enjoys it, there’s also a film adaptation!
One, Sarah Crossan
I read this book quite a while ago, but the beauty and poetry of it have stayed with me. Written in prose, One is the story of conjoined twins who have to make the decision of whether or not to be separated. This was such an emotional read, but also a very quick one that I couldn’t put down. This would be perfect for non-readers because the poetic format makes it a fairly short book and an easy one to read.
In at the Deep End, Kate Davies
This book made me laugh, a lot! Funny books are always good entryways into enjoying books, they’re fun, cheeky and so easy to absorb yourself into. This book follows a lead who realises she may be a lesbian, it’s about her exploring this and running into some very funny situations along the way. I would recommend this book to your non-reader friend because it is pure fun, guilt-free, enjoyable reading!
I think I’d add the Six of Crows duology to this list!! Or older favourites like Divergent or The Hunger Games, since so many like the film adaptations, and I know that my personal group of non-reading friends might actually read those :’)
