It was a weekend in November this year that I watched my first Christmas film, the terrible Christmas with a View. Honestly. Shocking. But, whilst watching the film I completed half of my Christmas shopping and suddenly started feeling very festive. But why do awful Christmas films make us so happy?
There are a very classy line of Christmas films that will always be the festive holiday films to champion all others. You know what I’m talking about, Love Actually, The Holiday, Elf, Arthur Christmas, Christmas with the Kranks. These films sit on a pedestal above all others and take the cookie for being top notch Christmas films.
So what films am I talking about? Well first on the list has to be Christmas with a View, Christmas Trap, A Christmas Prince, A Crown for Christmas… there’s a theme here. I’m not saying these films are bad, but they’re so not good that we love them for it. We know the storylines, girl is unhappy, meets boy, hates boy, falls in love with boy, marries boy and maybe there’s a sequel. These films offer us nothing new and they certainly don’t offer glowing cinematography or script, but they are making us feel all warm and fuzzy.
Christmas is a time for cosiness and familiar traditions. By watching these same old films, we’re bringing back the festive time of year and making ourselves feel cosy and reminiscent. When we fall back into some country run by a young King and his naughty daughter who needs a nanny (as appears to be the storyline in several Christmas films this year), we sink into an hour and a half of not having to think about anything else. These stories distract us and remind us of the simple traditions celebrated at Christmas.
I love a cringey Christmas film as much at the next person and I am proud to admit that! I especially like them on whilst I wrap my Christmas presents. I think there is something about absorbing the lives of these bizarre characters that allows us to forget our own for a little bit in a season that can be very busy for most. I say bring on all the budget Christmas films Netflix can throw at us and give me those cosy vibes!

This sounds like basically every Christmas movie on Hallmark Chanel. They’re super cheesy and predictable but you can’t help but love them for all the warm and fuzzies
I watched The Knight Before Christmas yesterday and compared to that A Christmas Prince is a masterpiece! Truly horrific, but I had a lot of fun, haha!
