Five books released in 2020 (so far) that you need to read

2020 has been quite the year so far and we’re only in July! But it has seen the release of some amazing new books gracing our shelves. Here are five of the ones I have really enjoyed getting stuck into.

House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J Maas

Perfect for a reader looking for something that will make you cry just as much as it’ll make you laugh. 

This is the first book in the new Crescent City series and is an urban fantasy following Bryce. Bryce isn’t the chosen one in this story, she has been thrown into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight. If you like Sarah J Maas’ previous work you will 100% love this book too. Bryce is a fantastic main character, equal parts flawed, heroic and hilarious!

Good Girl, Bad Blood, Hollie Jackson

Ideal for someone looking for a gripping mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat and very invested. 

This book is book number two to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which follows Pip as she goes down the route of becoming a detective in the process of completing a school project. Book two follows a whole new mystery for Pip to solve, and basically for the reader to try and solve too.  You will most definitely feel like an amateur detective when reading this book!

Kingdom of Souls, Rena Barron

If you’re after a fantasy with powerful magic, deceit and drama, this is the book for you!

Arrah is surrounded by people who can do magic and yet she still hasn’t found her own. This book follows her journey to desperately trying to find her magic, whilst also trying to solve the mystery of missing children in her village. This book honestly covers so many different paths, family dynamics, a magic system filled with variety, new cultures, new threats.

Hold Back the Tide, Melinda Salisbury

This book will both creep you out and draw you in, in a beautiful mess of fantasy and horror. 

I went into this book not knowing much and honestly just diving right in thinking it was a book about a father and his daughter. And it was about this. But it was also about this other weird fantasy come horror plot that I don’t want to tell you about because I think you too should go in blind. But if you want a village mob, some weird arse creatures and lots of tension… then this book should be read by you.

The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Keep, H.G Parry

If you want a book about books that sees your favourite book characters jump out of the page then it’s this book, read this book.

I feel like I’m always shouting about this book, but honestly, it’s worth it. This is about two brothers, one of whom can bring the characters from his books into the real world. There ends up being a threat that they all need to be able to club together to solve. Honestly, this book is just the best thing because it brings a load of well-known book characters into one room and who doesn’t want to read about that?!
