The Secret of Spellshadow Manor, Bella Forrest (2017)
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult, Magic
I just finished this book and I loved it! It kept me hooked, it was an easy read, it presented some really interesting stories lines, it was a fab fantasy. I think the description could have been more detailed and more time could have been taken to work on some of the writing. But generally I found this a really enjoyable reading experience and I will be ordering the second book in the series as soon as possible.
This was recommended to me initially because I am a fan of Harry Potter, I can see why, because it is set in a magical school. But this is a very different type of book, the feel is completely opposite to Harry Potter, the type of magic is very different. I really liked the way the scene was set in this book, it was all very dark and stormy, which for me set a really good atmosphere. As a contrast to Potter, there was little hope in this story, everything was very doom and gloom, but it worked for the plot.
There were quite a few different characters to sink your teeth into and decide whether you wanted to trust them or not. I liked the mix we had and the relationships going on, some of the characters are very loveable and there’s a good bit of team work as you’d hope from a boarding school type book. If you’re looking to fill the magic shaped hole in your heart, this will occupy that space for a little while.
This book totally captured me and now that I’ve finished it I’m kind of lost, what else can I read now?
